New MedImpact Building Accommodates
Company’s Growth

Reno Contracting has completed an extensive office build-out to accommodate growth of pharmacy benefits management company MedImpact. The ground-up, 6-story, 148,554 s.f. , steel framed, building consisted of a build-out with the office improvements and a 184, 018 sq. ft. , three-level poured in place concrete parking structure. Completed in February 2010, the building is located at 10181 Scripps Gateway Ct., in San Diego, (just off the I-15 freeway at Scripps Poway Parkway).

The project accommodated MedImpact’s need for additional space, as well as office upgrades such as a server room, high-end millwork, glass partitions, wood plank ceilings, and state-of-the-art audiovisual, telecommunications and security systems. Blasting was required as the structures were built on rock, and the project’s schedule faced weather challenges, resulting in 37 days of work lost due to rain. The 18-month project began in August 2008.

The Owner, Sudberry Properties, put together a strong team of professionals to support Reno’s construction efforts, including: Development Manager, Devcon-CPM; Architects Hanna Gabriel Wells; Civil Engineer, Fuscoe Engineering; Landscape Architect, Lifescapes International; Structural Engineer, Hope Engineers; Mechanical Engineer, McParlane & Associates; Electrical Engineer, ILA Zammit Engineering; Energy Design, Brummitt Energy Associates; and LEED Consulting by Drew George & Partners, Inc.

The Reno project team members included: Chris Heim, Project Director/Manager; Steve Bettis, Lead Superintendent Site, Shell and Core; Ken Taylor, Superintendent–Parking Structure and Site; Gary Magill, Superintendent–Tenant Improvements; Mick Ellis, Assistant Superintendent/Project Engineer; Matt Montgomery, Project Engineer; and Mary Parker, Project Administrator.

UCSD Stewart Commons Dining Renovation Complete

San Diego, CA

ucsd_commons

Work was recently completed on the UCSD Stewart Commons project which consists of a complete renovation of an existing student dining facility. The site had extremely limited access and is located in a congested part of the UCSD campus. All work had to be closely coordinated with campus officials and student activities.
The project scope consisted of an overhaul of all mechanical systems, new loading dock design, and a state of the art kitchen with all the bells
and whistles.

The mechanical scope included the replacement of one of two existing air handlers, new heating hot water systems, new domestic hot water systems, rework of the existing chilled water system, and a new building management system. The existing loading dock was completely removed and replaced with a larger dock and new covered dumpster area. A large grease interceptor was installed below the loading dock. The excavation for the grease interceptor posed a logistical challenge, as it blocked the only building access, and the site had no room to stockpile excavated material. The kitchen featured all new food service equipment and a “smart” exhaust system with nine interconnected hoods. The hoods are operated by a Marvel control panel that is wired into the building management system.

The Stewart Commons project was submitted for and expected to receive a LEED Silver Certification. The dining facility opened on schedule this fall and will serve hundreds of UCSD students and faculty each day for years to come.

The Reno Contracting team for the UCSD Commons project included: Chris Heim, Project Director; Rick Laferney, Senior Project Manager; Patrick Johnston, Assistant Project Manager; Dave Enos, Project Superintendent; Tony Principi, Project Engineer; Mary Parker, Project Administrator.
