Welcome to the fall edition of Breaking Ground. Normally I use this space to talk about some of the latest developments in our industry or at Reno Contracting. Today, I want to focus on a different aspect of our company, our people, and the role we serve in the community. As a business, Reno Contracting has the opportunity, and obligation, in my opinion, to be a good corporate citizen. It’s reflected in how we do business and how we treat our people (our no. 1 asset), our clients, our consultants and subcontractors, and in what we choose to do beyond our business. Simply put, companies are able to have an impact on the community beyond their day-to-day operations.
We are fortunate to be able to freely exercise our belief in doing the right thing – being honest, ethical and supporting the community and our country – in our business and in our charitable endeavors. East County Family YMCA, HomeAid San Diego, Scripps Foundation, Arc of San Diego, and Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation are just some of the community organizations that Reno Contracting supports. New MedImpact Building Accommodates Company’s Growth
Reno Contracting has completed an extensive office build-out to accommodate growth of pharmacy benefits management company MedImpact. The six-floor, 148,554 sq. ft. project for the steel-framed, ground-up private commercial building consisted of a full build-out with office improvements and a 184,018 sq. ft., three-level poured in place concrete parking structure. Completed in February 2010, the building is located at 10181 Scripps Gateway Ct., in San Diego, (just off the I-15 freeway at Scripps Poway Parkway).
The project accommodated MedImpact’s need for additional space, as well as office upgrades such as a server room, high-end millwork, glass partitions, wood plank ceilings, and state-of-the-art audiovisual, telecommunications and security systems...

American Specialty Health Relocates to New Corporate Offices
Reno Contracting started tenant improvement construction in early May on the corporate offices of American Specialty Health Incorporated (ASH), a leading national health and wellness company. The new offices are in Sorrento Mesa having been relocated from downtown San Diego.
Construction at the new Sorrento Mesa location consisted of 170,000-sf of tenant improvements in 2 existing buildings and accommodates all of ASH’s 750 employees. The project included a 1,700-sf server room, 2,550-sf lunch room/lung, 2,000-sf training center and a 1,200-sf fitness center. Dean Peterson, vice president of construction management and Tim Wright, senior associate, both with Irving Hughes/CM, oversaw the construction process on behalf of ASH. UCSD Stewart Commons Dining Renovation Complete
Work was recently completed on the UCSD Stewart Commons project which consists of a complete renovation of an existing student dining facility. The site had extremely limited access and is located in a congested part of the UCSD campus. All work had to be closely coordinated with campus officials and student activities. The project scope consisted of an overhaul of all mechanical systems, new loading dock design, and a state of the art kitchen with all the bells and whistles.
