note from our president
Greetings for 2010! On behalf of Reno Contracting I wish you all great health and happiness in this year. We’ve all been keeping our eyes and ears open for the economy, especially how it’s impacting the building industry. Although this year will be challenging, out of the data I’ve researched, we’re starting to see some positive improvements in the federally funded sector, and we are seeing more opportunities for sustainable building services. I’ve outlined what I think are the key points that will impact and steer our course this season...

Learning More about AB 1103
Starting in 2011, Assembly Bill 1103 will go into effect. The legislation will require that all existing commercial buildings in California have an Energy Star rating before they are leased, refinanced, or sold in their entirety. The new bill will offer both challenges and opportunity for building owners and property managers alike, and even though it will not be enacted until next year, it has ramifications starting now. Breaking Ground recently spoke with Eric Scheidlinger, Reno Manager, Efficient Sustainable Practices, about AB 1103...

ResMed Corporate Headquarters "Gem in the Rough" |

ResMed a "Gem" in 2009
ResMed Corporate Headquarters has been labeled a "gem in the rough", a glistening pearl that enhances its former industrial site located in the middle of a mixed use residential community in Kearny Mesa. ResMed consists of a 6-story mid-rise complex, attached to a 2-story low-rise structure and a 6-level parking garage, incorporating 230,238-sf of total office space for the company that treats sleeping disorders.
Even before its completion in May 2009, the project created a buzz since the owner, ResMed Corporation, spared no expense with maintaining their vision. The heavy use of art, as well as several rare and high-quality finishes throughout the building’s lobby, office space, cafe, health club and landscaping, sets it apart from other Class-A office space. High quality Trespa, Alucobond, Zinc and Stone Panels have also been incorporated into the exterior design to bring a unique character to the appearance of the building...

Marriott Residence Inn Gaslamp Open
for Business
Reno Contracting recently completed the extended stay Residence Inn by Marriott. The 13-story, 240-room, 215,890 s.f. hotel project opened just in time for the holidays. The project, located in the Gaslamp district of Downtown San Diego at 6th and J Street near Petco Park, consists of a multi-level underground parking structure over a high-rise tower and West wing with a 3rd floor pool over future retail space. The 21-month project was scheduled to allow the owner occupancy well ahead of the completion date, in order to coordinate extensive furnishings and fixtures installation.
The project designed by ACM Architects and Engineered by DCI Engineers incorporated a cast-in-place concrete high rise structure, with 6.5” post tension slabs throughout to maximize space. The hotel structure is only inches from existing neighboring buildings, which made access to the building and coordination of construction, including material deliveries, a challenge throughout the project...
