Note from our president
 |
Welcome to February's Breaking Ground. I thank you for joining us. This
year has certainly gotten off to a very interesting start!
Inside you'll find details of our first Southern California Building Forum, held on January 28, which focused on BIM, LEED and LEAN construction. You'll also learn about some recent awards, completed projects and highlights of the Warrior Foundation, a not-for-profit that assists our military in local hospitals.
Breaking News! We are delighted with our success of two
proposals with Kaiser Permanente. The first, a parking structure in
Anaheim; the second an award for an undefined project-delivery package
over a period of three years. We'll be reporting on the progress as we
move ahead. Additionally, we were recently awarded a TI project for MedImpact.
Here's what's ahead:
- The next session of the Southern California Building Forum,
February 25, at Reno Contracting;
- The National Convention for Associated General
Contractors/Construction Expo, March 4-7, San Diego Convention Center. To register: http://convention.agc.org/
We appreciate all the positive feedback you have given and welcome your
continued comments. We are committed to keeping you informed about our
industry and trends. My very best to you.
Sincerely,
RENO CONTRACTING, INC.

Engaging with the Experts at The Southern California Building Forum

|
Industry leaders meet at Reno headquarters to discuss LEAN, BIM and LEED. |
The SCBF will be an ongoing series of discussions among key players in the San Diego and Southern California construction industry, addressing a range of topics critical to business.
The first Southern California Building Forum (SCBF) was held on January 28 at Reno Contracting’s headquarters.
Fulfilling a need for regular exchange of ideas among peers, the Forums are designed to promote an open sharing of information in a small group setting. Participants discuss their experiences and opinions as they contribute and glean knowledge from the group.
The theme of the first Forum was how to “Improve Quality and Reduce Costs in Construction With Emerging Technologies.” LEAN Construction, Building Information Modeling (BIM), Leadership in Environmental and Energy Design (LEED) as well as Preconstruction Technology. Joe Mascari and Simon Warner from Childs Mascari Warner Architects; Paul McParlane, of McParlane & Associates; and Reno’s Ed Wenz were featured presenters.
Mascari and Warner kicked it off. They discussed how the industry is shifting to incorporate LEAN Construction and Building Information Modeling (BIM). Based on the Toyota Production System, Mascari described LEAN as “giving the client exactly what they want, when they need it and without defect.” This is achieved by bringing the entire team – owner, A/E team, contractor and sub-contractors – together from the beginning of the project as “equal partners” to ensure success.
BIM can be deployed as a stand-alone application or as a component of LEAN, using three-dimensional, real-time building modeling. The process increases productivity in design and construction. The result is better clash detection and increased control of the construction schedule and costs, thus saving time and money.
Another part of the forum touched on the already well-known “Green Movement." McParlane focused on the many advantages of LEED/Green design and build, and explained how “healthier” buildings increase a company’s profitability through increased employee productivity. Wenz concluded with an overview of how Estimating and Preconstruction services, such as Timberline, can utilize costs to generate quick budgets for current and projected future costs.

Top Leadership Sustains County’s Growth

|
Matt Reno |
Each year, the San Diego Daily Transcript shines the spotlight on individuals who sustain our county’s growth and prosperity. From more than 200 nominations, the publication’s editorial board selects leaders who had made an impact this past year on San Diego’s real estate, construction, technology and finance arenas. Reno’s founder and CEO, Matt Reno, was recently named a Top Influential for 2009, for his role in charting the course for one of San Diego’s top general contractors. “It’s truly an honor to have the opportunity to be on this list representing Reno Contracting,” said Matt.
This past year Reno Contracting has completed projects that have a positive influence throughout the community. Among those are:
- Scripps Health in Rancho Bernardo, awarded an Excellence in Construction Award by the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC);
- Kilroy Realty Sabre Springs III project, awarded San Diego’s first LEED Silver Certification;
- Sudberry Properties’ Terraces at Copley Point, undergoing LEED Silver Certification for core and shell; and
- Cisterra Development’s Gateway Torrey Hills project, also winning ABC’s Excellence in Construction award.
As CEO of Reno Contracting, Matt’s role is to look at the bigger picture, strategize and plan the company’s future. Along with President Walt Fegley, their values are clear: put top priority on maintaining positive relationships with their clients, team members and community. Since its inception in 1993, the company has expanded its expertise through a diverse range of project types: commercial, biotech, medical, industrial, technical, hospitality and green building.
