SCRIPPS CLINIC'S TI AHEAD OF SCHEDULE

Reno Contracting is on the fast-track to complete the new Scripps Clinic medical office building located in Rancho Bernardo. Combining a 51-million- dollar construction budget for the building and tenant improvements (TI), the Scripps Clinic has a projected completion date of August 2008. The new medical facility will replace an existing building adjacent to the current clinic, and will position Scripps Clinic to expand services to meet the health care needs of the rapidly growing North County.

After Reno was contracted for the project by Kilroy Realty for the shell and core, Scripps initiated hard bids for their tenant improvements. After multiple meetings with Scripps management, CEO Matt Reno and President Walt Fegley were able to gain their confidence and trust by showing the company’s successes in previous TI capabilities. With Reno’s track record in aggressive schedules and pricing, accurate cost estimating, plus their past experience with TI, they were awarded the Scripps Clinic project over four competing companies.

When completed, Scripps Clinic will house a state-of-the-art out-patient surgery center and recovery bays, a fully digital radiology department, MRI facilities, general surgery and organ transplant services, an expanded urgent care center, sports medicine and primary care services. Comprising 150,000 square feet, the new medical complex is built of structural steel and concrete, and will be almost twice the size of the current, 25-year-old Scripps Clinic it replaces.

Reno’s clear and systematic day-to-day documentation of the project assists the design team in quickly resolving build-out issues during TI, thereby avoiding delays and costly overruns. Also, as a result of Reno building the project’s shell, they have been able to mobilize directly from the shell construction to the TI phase of the job without delay. This is due to the construction team and temporary facilities already being in place.

Through its ongoing relationships with subcontractors, the various trades go “the extra mile” to assure not only top-quality construction, but also projects that are brought in on time.

Architect for the six-story Scripps Clinic Rancho Bernardo project is Pacific Cornerstone Architects led by principal Tim Schulze. Interiors are by Lee, Burkhart, Liu Inc.

To date, how is Reno’s performance? Just ask Kilroy’s VP of Commercial Development Randy Jackson, who recently said, “You guys (Reno) are doing a great job…you are ahead of schedule and have picked up time from the start!”
           

Rancho Bernardo will be home to a new Scripps Clinic built by Reno Contracting and developed by Kilroy with state-of-the-art medical facilities.
