BIOSITE CORPORATE
HEADQUARTERS TO START
Construction work for the new headquarters campus for Biosite
Incorporated is set to begin in September 2003. The first phase of this exciting project
includes four buildings totaling 352,754 square feet, and consists of 2 three-story
buildings and 2 two-story buildings. The buildings are built using structural
steel interior framework with site cast concrete panels, while the exterior
is glass and aluminum. The ultimate build-out of this campus through later
phases will comprise approximately 800,000 square feet of R&D laboratories,
manufacturing and office space.
This campus
will ultimately contain all of the Biosite Diagnostics facilities,
including FDA validated medical device manufacturing, various
types of lab space, research facilities, quality control,
warehouse, distribution, as well as administrative and office
space. The interior space build-out is currently in the final
phase of programming, with interior improvements design set
to begin immediately.
INVITROGEN CP-11 NEAR FINAL COMPLETION
CP-11 provides additional manufacturing
and research and development space for Invitrogen at its
operations facility located in Carlsbad. This project created
specialty-manufacturing areas as well as generic laboratory
bench and fume hood space.
The construction area was deep within the building and required extreme cooperation
between Reno Contracting, project sub-contractors & service providers,
and Invitrogen. The project was phased with very short timelines as some
construction areas were occupied thus requiring equipment and personnel interim
moves.
CP-11 employed construction & finish methods developed and refined throughout
this multi-phased project. The primary objective was to complete the project
while having no impact on facility operations. The team performed admirably
to successfully achieve the goal.
Invitrogen Corporation (Nasdaq:IVGN) provides products and services that

RENO STARTING UP ON DIVERSA’S
NEW FERMENTATION ROOM
The Fermentation
Room T.I. will begin
in August 2003, and the new fermentors will be on line by
September 2003. Diversa Corporation is a global leader in
developing and applying proprietary technologies to discover
and evolve novel genes and gene pathways from diverse sources.
Diversa is the only company to combine the power of discovery
from the environment with cutting edge gene evolution methods
to develop small molecules and enzymes for pharmaceutical,
agricultural, chemical, and industrial markets.
This T.I. will provide additional capacity to meet existing demands of Diversa’s
Fermentation Lab.
In a short period of six weeks Reno Contracting, Inc. will convert an existing
shipping & receiving warehouse into a Fermentation Room. Fuse seal lab waste,
trench drains, epoxy flooring, ultra pure process steam, D.I. water, HHW,
CHW, heat exchanger, stand alone Liebert, boilers, exhaust fans, louvers,
switchgear, controls, and even a new lab sink. The addition of twelve new
30L fermentors will provide Diversa’s customers with a readily available
supply of novel enzymes and proteins to accelerate the development and commercialization
of their products.
RENO BIOTECH GROUP UPDATE
The Reno Biotech group is moving forward on all fronts.
The core group of employees for the Biotech group been identified and began
a continuous and ongoing training program in late 2001 to keep up with developments
in Biotech and Laboratory work, along with related design trends. The Reno
cGMP compliance program is in its second revision, as is our Standard Operating
Procedure, SOP, for constructing FDA validated space. Reno continues to maintain
a library of FDA literature, lab design guidelines, clean room design guidelines,
lab and clean room construction manuals, lab equipment literature, etc.
Reno Biotech personnel are continuing their involvement within the Biotech
industry through their involvement with Biocom and ISPE. In August, Reno
hosted a booth at the ISPE vendor night which highlighted our experience
in the San Diego Biotech and Laboratory construction market. In addition,
Reno is sponsoring the Biocom Facilities Committee conference for September
2003.
On the work front, Reno is continuing its ongoing construction services for
Invitrogen, Diversa and Biosite, and is in pre-construction on several new
and exciting projects. To continue to serve our Biotech clients, we are continuing
to update our Biotech and Laboratory cost data base with current Biotech
and Laboratory pricing. Our goal is to continue to serve our Biotech and
Laboratory clients with the highest level of service and best technical knowledge
in the industry.
