RENO CONTRACTING’S KILROY SABRE SPRINGS AWARDED SAN DIEGO’S FIRST LEED SILVER CERTIFICATION FOR CORE AND SHELL
Reno Contracting, having completed the final of Kilroy Realty Corporation’ s Sabre Springs three-building Class-A multi -tenant office campus, holds the distinction of having built San Diego’s first Silver LEED-certified core and shell building project. The prestigious Silver Certification, given by the United States Green Building Council, was awarded through the USGBC’s LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) rating system. Spearheaded by architectural firm Hanna Gabriel Wells, the building was awarded top-rating points for its many positive environmental attributes. Within the next few months, an additional four buildings built by Reno will also become LEED Certified, which proves why they have been named as one of the “Top 50 Green Contractors” in the nation by Engineering News Record.

Smart Building for Silver Certification
Owner and developer Kilroy Realty Corporation has become a leading proponent of LEED-certified design, development and property operation.  To meet qualifications for the USGBC, Reno Contracting worked closely with the architect and owner, strategizing the complex issues necessary to fulfill the certification requirements. By capturing and using existing water from a shallow water table under the parking structure, Reno’s engineers were able to provide landscape irrigation while lowering the property’s water bill. The water would have otherwise been diverted to storm drains.

In addition to water conservation, Reno Contracting used building materials with a high-recycled content, making a significant reduction in the environmental impact of the construction.  A “cool roof” that reduces Building Three’s reliance on air conditioning was another factor in LEED’s award of Silver Certification for the final building at the Sabre Springs campus.
